Trash Sifter is a simple AppleScript Application that makes your Mac
Trash Can work the way it should have been designed to work in the
first place: instead of periodically deleting everything in the trash
including recently?added items, thereby increasing the risk of
unintentional deletions, Trash Sifter goes through the contents of the
Trash Can one?by?one, datestamping items it hasn`t seen there before
and deleting items that have been there for more than a certain period
of time.
If you have Trash Sifter set up to run automatically, you may never
need to empty the Trash at all but can still be confident that
anything you put in there by mistake will not be deleted straight
away. As an added bonus, if you use Aladdin`s Stuffit Spacesaver or
similar disk compression software, you can optionally set Trash Sifter
to "stomp" the Trash, that is, to compress everything left in the
Trash so that it wastes as little disk space as possible.
Trash Sifter requires that you have a Macintosh computer running
AppleScript and the "beep", "display dialog", "choose file", "File
Commands" and "Read/Write Commands" Scripting Additions as well as the
Scriptable Finder (all included with system 7.5 and above). You`ll
also need the following "third party" Scripting Additions (all free):
? "Jon`s Commands" by Jon Pugh.
? "current date in seconds" by Gregory T. Quinn. Included in the GTQ
Scripting Library.
? "File IO" from the Script Tools package by Late Night Software.
If you want to take advantage of Trash Sifter`s stomping facility,
you`ll also need to have Stuffit Spacesaver software installed.
