Trash?Desktop is a freeware drag and drop utility for rebuilding the
Desktop. Just drag and drop any unprotected local disk and then
restart the Mac for rebuilding fresh new Desktop files.
Why do this? With a classic Mac OS, [rebuilding the desktop is good housekeeping][1] (Web Archive) and should be done on a semi-regular basis. Sometimes you need to rebuild the desktop just so the Finder can add the correct icons to its desktop database. If you don't rebuild the desktop, after a while you may notice things like broken or "plain vanilla" generic icons. This is usually the first visible sign that the Desktop Data files have become corrupted and need refreshing.
You can manually Restart while holding down the OPTION + COMMAND keys
and wait until the Finder asks if you wish to rebuild the desktop. So
why use "Trash?Desktop"? Because the Finder when it rebuilds the
desktop, it doesn't do a thorough clean. "Trash?Desktop" does, it sets
the invisible data files "Desktop DB", "Desktop DF" and "Desktop" to
visible and then moves them to the Trash. When your Mac starts again
it forces a complete rebuild of those files.
