The TO8 was a French computer built by THOMSON and released in
September 1986. It was, along with its brothers, the MO6 and TO9+, an
attempt to respond to increased competition from Amstrad, Commodore,
and more important still, the new 16-bit machines.
Although it runs on the same CPU as its predecessors (the T07, etc),
the TO8 included many improvements, for example a mechanical keyboard,
extended memory, new graphics modes, and improved sound. In addition
to this, the TO8 was compatible with software from the TO7 and the
TO7/70, giving it access to a wide range of software from day 1. Some
of the better known programs for this machine included Multiplan, a
spreadsheet, and Paragraphe, a Word Processor.
Some years after the release of the TO8, the TO8-D was released. This
model contained an integrated disk drive, providing far superior
loading times for software. Success was also helped by the fact that
THOMSON computers were widely used in French schools. As an
advertisement says, this is the "intelligent gift" to give to your
children.
Unfortunately, the TO8, like the MO6, was confined predominantly to
the French market, and as such the quality of software was
significantly below the capabilities of the machine. French developers
preferred to invest their money in titles for the more popular
machines. THOMSON itself lost interest in the machine at the end of
the 80s, with the withdrawal of their project to develop a 16/32 bit
machine. Instead, they launched the TO16, a PC compatible, designed to
compete against the the existing professional machines (mainly the TO9
and TO9+). In the end, however, THOMSON decided to give up the public
computers sector, signing the death warrant for the TO8-D.
