Mac OS 9
Mac OS 9 is a Macintosh operating system released by Apple Computer
(today Apple Inc.) on October 23, 1999. It is the latest version of
the "classic" Mac OS that has been replaced by today's Mac OS X. has
"over 50 new features", such as 128-bit encryption and Sherlock 2
search engine.
Mac OS 9 was codenamed Sonata and originally Apple was intended to
release it as Mac OS 8.7. Although Mac OS 9 did not have many features
of today's operating systems as preemptive multitasking or memory
protection, it features features such as auto-update and multi-user
support.
The latest update was released by Apple in 2001. Although Mac OS 9 is
still not developing and updating, it is still running on many Apple
Macintosh computers where it is not possible or impractical to install
Mac OS X.
Mac OS 9 and Classic
PowerPC version of Mac OS X has a built-in Mac OS 9 compatible layer
called Classic. This is basically a complete Mac OS 9 installation for
the applications and hardware that require this operating system. New
Apple Macintosh computers are not included on the Intel processor
platform, but Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 applications can be run through
third-party software solutions.
