Smartcom is a telecommunications suite which includes:
? A terminal emulator
? Presets for connecting the terminal emulator to CompuServe, Dow
Jones, GENie, Mac to Mac, and Online With Hayes
? Control panel and applications for sending and printing FAXes
? Extension for using your to listen for incoming call from FAX
machines
? Desk accessory for checking FAX status
? Drivers for using the suite with various modems
The "Mac to Mac" preset can be used to exchanging files between two
Macintosh computers.
Confusingly, this 1993 edition named "Smartcom" is newer than both
"[Smartcom II][1]" (which had already reached v2.1A by 1984 March) and
the original Smartcom by Hayes in 1984.
Another Hayes product, Smartcom Exec, was said to include some of the
more powerful abilities of Smartcom III, while being almost as easy as
the feature-limited Smartcom EZ. Both Smartcom Exec and Smartcom III
included a scripting language, while the latter was said to be more
capable and more expensive.
Various versions of Smartcom were bundled with different makers'
modems, or available for purchase separately.
