Rapscallion is a highly advanced MUD client, designed to suit all
styles of MUD, and all styles of mudding.
It is currently the Mac client of choice on many MUDs, MOOs, MUSHes,
MUVEs, chat servers and others, and some of its more unusual features
make it ideal for other uses, such as the Internet Relay Chat (IRC)
### What is a MUD?
For those unfamiliar with it, the term MUD is a very broad one, which
describes a wide variety of environments to which many people can
simultaneously be connected, all interacting with each other.
A good summary of the uses of MUDs comes from George Reese:
"Although the most common environment is a gaming environment, MUDS
need not be games. In fact, among other uses of MUDs that I know of,
there are virtual colleges, a MUD where victims of abuse can come
together in a productive environment, and MUDs designed to bring
students with disabilities into social contact with one another. The
single defining theme for MUD is therefore being a virtual environment
where multiple people come in contact."
There are many different varieties of MUD, each of which has its own
particular characteristics and uses. The bottom line, though, is that
MUDs can be both fun and productive places to spend time, and they
give immense enjoyment to many hundreds of thousands of people
throughout the world.
