MacSafe II (sometimes stylized as MacSafe ][) is "advanced security
software for Macintosh files & networks". MacSafe II allows the user
to add password protection and file encryption to documents on their
Macintosh through the creation of so-called "safes", which are created
and administered using the MacSafe ][ Administrator application. A
help guide is accessible from the Apple Menu within MacSafe ][
Administrator.

When first starting the MacSafe ][ Administrator application, the user
will be prompted to personalize it. Personalization will fail if the
disk is locked, but the application will proceed anyway. The user will
also be warned if the current system software is untested with this
version of MacSafe II, but the user is allowed to proceed despite the
warning.

MacSafe II can perform encryption using either the full DES standard
(one of the few security programs from the time to offer it), or a
faster (but less secure) proprietary algorithm.

The download on this page was created from original media and encoded
using BinHex 4.0. The serial number is #683978.

While MacSafe II was initially a replacement for the original MacSafe,
it was itself supplanted, according to Bruce Schneier in Protect Your
Macintosh (Peachpit Press, 1994) by Kent Marsh's CryptoMatic.
