> The authoring language Authorware, previously known as Course of
> Action, and latterly also known as Authorware Professional, or
> Authorware Attain, was first developed in 1990 as a means of
> enabling individuals without interest of proficiency in traditional
> programming, to create multi-media courseware quickly.
>
> According to Michael Allen, the designer of Authorware, the language
> originated from studying how people created instructional material
> for [the PLATO system][1], and from considering what programming
> background they had. In consequence, an iconic-based interface was
> developed, that required a minimum of learning by the author before
> he or she was able to create interactive courseware.

> Research and Teaching Tool][2], with additional info and corrections
> from [An Overview of Authorware 7 ?and Its Evolution][3].

The third major iteration of the PLATO-inspired authoring tool for
computer-based training, and the second under Macromedia.

 * DL #1: Not-for-resale version of Macromedia Authorware 3.5, CD
imaged as an ".iso" in a zipped ".zip" archive.

 * DL #2: Authorware 3.5.2 Non-commercial updater encoded as BinHex,
required to allow [Director 5][4] movies to be imported into
Authorware 3.5. Works with DL #1.

 * DL #3: Authorware 3.5.2 commercial updater encoded as BinHex,
required to allow [Director 5][4] movies to be imported into
Authorware 3.5. Will not work with not-for resale and academic
versions of Authorware 3.5, such as DL #1.

 * DL #4: Fixed version of the GetFileName XCMD with source code,
similar to the one in the Goodies:XCMD:GetFileName folder of the
Authorware 3.5 CD but patched to address a crash when selecting
volumes instead of files or folders. BinHex encoded StuffIt self-
   extracting archive.

 * DL #5: Authorware Videodevice Driver Kit 2.0. For creating new
overlay, digital video, and laserdisc drivers for Authorware.
   BinHex encoded StuffIt self-extracting archive.

 * DL #6: FTP UCD (Windows) and XCMD (Macintosh) custom function as
described in the Authorware 3 and 4 documentation, for scripting
FTP events in Authorware. From the [Authorware Developer
   Center][5]

 * DL #7: Shockwave Portfolio for Authorware 3.5, a series of
examples from the [Authorware Developer Center][6]. BinHexed
   StuffIt self-extracting archive

 * DL #8: Authorware 3.5.1 Working Model (demo).

Hot links
Version 3 introduces hyperlinks through a [HyperCard][7]-inspired
Navigate palette. These tools, with the capacity to create links, a
glossary, and searchable "hot" text, can be summoned through the new
Framework and Navigate icons.

Director 4 support
For complex animations and greater interactivity, [Director 4
content][8] can be embedded in Authorware. Authorware-generated
courseware can send messages to Director "movies" through Lingo
scripting with the TellLingo icon.

More embeddable content, better performance
Beyond Director, 16-bit AIFF audio and RTF text can now be embedded
along with QuickTime 2.x movies, HyperCard XCMDs and XCFNs, and PICT
images. Applications created with Authorware 3 compute graphs and
calculate loops faster than ever.

To the Internet, PowerPC, and beyond
3.5 extends Authorware further with Shockwave support through a
downloadable Afterburner app, brand new PowerPC-native authoring tools
and runtime, and a plug-in API based on [Xtras][9] for Director 5.

CD-ROM goodies
The included CD-ROM includes more than 1,000 pieces of clip-art and
multiple tiny sample projects, demos, and a completely rewritten help
system.
