SilverServer is networking software that allows you to share local
hard drives and modems over an AppleTalk network or via telephone.
There is also a network chat feature called "ChatterBox".
SilverServer was originally bundled with LaCie's "Cirrus" series of
hard drives. Often included with it were early versions of the
[SilverLining][1] hard drive management software, as well as early
versions of Roger Bates' [DiskDup+][2]. It could also be purchased
separately for use with other, non-Cirrus hard drives.
The terminology used by SilverServer is a little unintuitive by modern
standards. Essentially, a drive or volume can be demarcated with
different letters in the SilverServer DA indicating how it's currently
being accessed by those on the network (including the current user). A
"P" indicates "Private", which means that whoever has the drive
currently mounted is allowed to both read as well as write to it, but
no one else can access it. An "S" meanwhile indicates a "Shared"
volume, meaning that multiple people can read the contents of the
volume at once, but they do not have write access.
Starting with version 1.13, it became possible for a user to mount a
volume as "Private" while others simultaneously mounted the same
volume as "Shared", though this could lead to unexpected effects. If
the old behavior is preferred (whereby a volume mounted Private cannot
be mounted by others), then such users should retain version 1.12
instead.
DL#1: Disk image contains folder copies of SilverServer v1.11 and
SilverLining v4.15. According to the "SSupdate" Read Me found in DL#2
below, v1.11 is only compatible with SilverLining 4.18 or earlier.
(This copy does not contain DiskDup.)
DL#2: 800k Disk Copy 4.2 disk image of SilverSilver v1.12 with
"SSupdate 1.13", which will update either versions 1.11 or 1.12 to
v1.13. Does not contain SilverLining, but will reportedly work with
SilverLining "5.0 or later". Bootable into System 6.0.2, Finder 6.1.
Also comes with DiskDup+ v1.3. Disk image encoded as BinHex 4.0.
Compatibility
Architecture: 68k
Not tested but should work at least through System 6.08.
Version 1.0 requires at least System 4.1 (though this may be referring
just to a particular System file, rather than a release version of the
System Software).
