Handy is an Atari Lynx emulator, written originally by Keith Wilkins
and ported to Mac OS X by Richard Bannister.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The emulator will not start without a copy of the
512-byte Lynx Boot ROM in the file "lynxboot.img". Do not ask me to
send you this file. I will not reply to any e-mail on this subject.

What is a Lynx?

The Lynx was the world's first hand-held console, released by Atari in
1989. It was technically far superior to the Nintendo Gameboy and the
Sega Game Gear. Although the main processor is a 65c02 running at 3.6
MHz, the Lynx also has two 16-bit coprocessors - called Mikey and Suzy
- used for advanced hardware video tricks and high quality stereo
sound.

Unfortunately high end specifications don't guarantee that a console
will be successful. Atari overpriced the Lynx, which was even more
expensive than a Sega Genesis and the PC Engine. In addition, the high
quality LCD screen consumed a lot of power, which meant that the
battery life was around five hours. The main problem, though, was the
lack of software. Today, slightly under 100 games exist for the Lynx.
Having said that, many of them are very high quality and good fun to
play. The Lynx II was launched with minor enhancements, but this came
too late to rescue the Lynx.

The Lynx can be classified as a portable console that lacked the
success it deserved. It remains an excellent choice on the second hand
market.
