## Maximizes disk performance.
| ![][4]
---|---
Introducing the easiest way to turbocharge system performance for
your Macintosh, Power Macintosh and MacOS compatibles. Turbo ToolKit
accelerates your system by eliminating the most common bottleneck to
performance--reading data off the disk. It is different from every
other system enhancement because it
focuses on speeding Disk I/O. Turbo ToolKit works transparently to
make your system faster and more
efficient.

## TurboDisk Keeps Disks Optimized
Get maximum disk performance and never worry about optimizing your
disk again.
![][6] Disk Checker reports exactly
how many files need optimization.
---
TurboDisk offers one-button, "user-friendly" defragmentation to
improve disk performance. The optimization routine also groups
frequently used files to the fastest part of
the disk. Once your disk is defragmented, TurboDisk works continually
to prevent further performance loss
by defragmenting files "on-the-fly". This background approach
transparently keeps your disk in optimal
condition. FWB's exclusive technology uses ultra-reliable error
checking to guarantee data
integrity.
## TurboBoot Saves Start-up Time
Save valuable minutes every day by dramatically accelerating your
system start-up. TurboBoot works transparently to make
Extension loading up to twice as fast as normal. And, with automatic
boot time benchmarks, you can
measure how much time you are saving. If you would rather be working
instead of waiting--then TurboBoot
is for you.
## TurboRead--Intelligent Caching
Get the best performance out of your most frequently used software
applications. TurboRead actually monitors disk activity to determine
which blocks of data are most frequently accessed and then buffers
them to RAM during idle time. Instantly
your applications are faster and more efficient. Menus pop up faster,
files open quicker--it's the easiest
way to get more performance out of your Mac.

disk.
### TurboBoot
* Pre-scans Extensions into a buffer in RAM, where they load
instantly at System start-up.
* Transparent operation.
* Makes extension loading twice as fast as normal.
### TurboRead
* Monitors your activity to determine which blocks of data are most
frequently accessed.
* Transparently tracks this data and buffers it to RAM during idle
time.
* Instantly your applications are faster and more efficient.
* Tracks how much time it saves so you can see real world results.

# Turbo ToolKit
Frequently Asked Questions
* * *
[Notes from FWB Software regarding release of TurboToolKit v1.0.1][8]
The following are some of the most frequently
asked questions about Turbo ToolKit:
What issues will update 1.0.1 fix?
1.0.1 will allow users with only one hard drive to optimize their
drive if they have a bootable System CD. It will allow a selection
of three caching styles to use, for maximum compatibility with
all programs. It will also fix some issues with TurboBoot not
updating. For full details on this and other enhancements, please
see the [updater read me file][9]
Does TurboToolKit replace Norton Utilities?
TurboToolKit and Norton Utilities are very different programs
with only one item in common--a disk defragmenter. Norton Utilities
is a diagnostic and recovery tool for your file structure, while
TurboToolKit speeds up day-to-day use of your machine. They are
very complimentary in their operation, and do not conflict with
or replace each other.
Why is my TurboBoot icon always "thinking?" (balloon
cloud on icon at start-up)
The most common causes of TurboBoot not updating and accelerating
your start-up are fragmented disks and frequent changing of extension
sets. Run the optimization feature of TurboDisk and restart holding
down the "/" key. Restart once more. your TurboBoot
should be working at this point. If you run into an issue where
this does not fix the problem, please isolate your extentions
to System and Turbo ToolKit only, then add back extentions until
you can reproduce the problem. If you believe you do have a
reproducable
conflict, please contact our Technical Support staff.
Why am I getting little or no benefit from TurboBoot?
Chances are you have few extensions or Virtual Memory is on. TurboBoot
works by taking scattered extensions and caching them into one
file, reducing seek times and read operations. The fewer extensions
you have, the fewer seek/reads you have to begin with. In addition,
Virtual Memory and similar utilities can reduce the effectiveness
of TurboBoot.
Which extensions are cached by TurboBoot?
TurboBoot only caches extensions that are less than 50k, as those
that are 50k or larger already load efficiently. Therefore, if
you have many large extensions, you will see only a slight
improvement.
What happens if my machine crashes while optimizing/defragmenting
in the background?
TurboDisk does all its operation via File Manager calls. It creates
a copy of each file before the original file is deleted. If your
machine crashes or the power goes out, you will find a folder
on one of your drives named "Files Moved
For TurboDisk." Copy
the contents of this folder to the original locations, and start
over.
Does TurboDisk "lock down" files for copy-protection
schemes or other reasons?
Unfortunately, we underestimated the demand for this feature,
and are looking into including it in a future release. The current
version will not lock down files.
Is optimization safe? Should I back up my files?
You should always back up your files before doing a procedure
that affects all files on your drive. The answer is yes, you should
back up. The actual optimization process should be totally safe
for you to use, however, so this is just a precaution, but a necessary
one.
Why does FileMaker say: "Sorry, FileMaker is unable to
read the disk this file is on. Click Continue to try again, or
click quit and copy this file to another disk?"
TurboRead uses two caching schemes to perform its acceleration.
This can reportedly confuse some applications. With the 1.0.1
version, you can set which of the two caches to use, or both,
depending on what works best for your system. Try different settings
in the Turbo ToolKit Control Panel until you find the optimal
setting for your machine.
Why am I only getting a small performance boost when using
TurboRead?
TurboRead uses a disk caching technology to record the most frequently
accessed blocks of data and buffer them into RAM, where they are
accessed quicker. If you only launch three or four applications
on your machine, and shut them down only when you shut the computer
down, then you will see little increase, as the total reads to
disk are much fewer than if you are frequently launching new programs
and utilities. The more you use your computer, the more TurboRead
helps you.
