Font Editor 2.0 was an app that Apple included with the Macintosh
Software Supplement disks they made available in 1985. The app was on
the disk "MacStuff 2 2/85". It's an early internal development tool
that's missing a lot of the usual Mac UI conveniences and has very
little tolerance for user error. It's easy to crash the system with
it. This app was probably used by Susan Kare and Bill Atkinson to
build the core fonts that came with the first Macintosh.
Little or no documentation was included with it, so I've made a user
guide that covers everything I was able to work out in the app.
The zip file contains two MFS disk images, one 800K and one 400K. The
800K disk contains more fonts to play with and has more space free.
Either disk may be used with a 128K/512K emulator, such as a custom
128K Macintosh variant of Mini vMac. Transferred to real floppies, the
disks may be used with a real 128K or 512K Macintosh, but the 800K
disk will only work with a compatible 800K external drive. Either will
work with something like Floppy Emu.
Both disks contain copies of Font Editor 2.0, ResEdit 0.5, Font/DA
Mover 1.5, system software 2.0, and Fonts?a font suitcase which is
required in order to use Font Editor. ResEdit is included to
facilitate assigning a usable font number to any fonts you produce and
wish to use. Although it works with system software 1.0, 2.0 is more
convenient to use. The original disk came with the earlier Font Mover
app. I've included Font/DA Mover instead since it's more flexible and
capable.
5/31/24 Update: I made new disk images and revised the user guide
after learning more about how Font Editor 2.0 works.
7/24/24: DL#2 applies some fixes to make the program more stable. See
comments below for details.
Compatibility
Architecture: 68k
Font Editor 2.0 requires a real or emulated Macintosh 128K/512K (not
512Ke) running system software 1.0 or 2.0. It will not run properly
(or at all) with any other ROMs.
