Empower II is security software for the early Macintosh. As the mid-
level entry in Magna's Empower series, it is more powerful than
Empower I, but lacks the networking capabilities of Empower Remote.

Empower II is capable of: User Registration, Password Protection,
Screen Lock-out, Volume Locking (including multi-volume support),
Access Logging, Disk Drive Controls, Folder Protection (System and
Applications), DES Encryption, Desktop Accessory and Apple Menu Item
management, as well as Guest and Group Access Privileges.

The default installation includes: the Empower II control panel, the
Empower Unlock utility (Empower UnLock), and [Disinfectant 3.5][1],
as well as the Communications Toolbox (v1.0). "Customize" permits the
user to select specific components for installation, as well as adjust
the size of the "system heap" (the amount of RAM allocated to system
operation). Just prior to installing, the user will be prompted to
personalize their installation with a Name and Organization. Once
installation is finished, the user will be asked to Restart.

Following restart (and once the Empower control panel loads), the user
will be prompted to "Install Empower" (that is, create the
Admininstrator user), interrupting the boot-up sequence. The user will
be prompted to define a security administrator by entering a Name and
Password. Once entered, the user will then be prompted to confirm
their password. Subsequent startups will now require a Name, Password,
and (optionally) Project, in order to proceed. Alternatively, the user
may select "Guest"; the Guest user is limited in access and
functionality by default, but this can be configured by the
Administrator user. Access privileges will be delineated within the
Finder by modified folder icons. (Should the user instead press
"Cancel" at boot, boot-up will complete without Empower being
activated.)

The Empower II control panel may be used to create additional users,
as well as switch between users. The administrator may also use the
control panel to configure permissions, encryption, volume locks, and
other parameters. Log-in and user switching is referred to by Empower
as "Registering". To disable Empower, open the Administrator
preferences as the Administrator user, then click "Release".

The Empower UnLock utility can be found inside the new "Magna Folder"
that was created at the root level of the boot disk during
installation. If launched, UnLock warns the user that it is only to be
used if they are having difficulties with Empower "Volume Lock", and
that they should try disabling that first from the Empower control
panel (though UnLock should be used regardless in the event of a power
failure during operation that results in the user being locked out of
a device). Following the warning, the user is given options for
selecting a SCSI volume, in a manner similar to Apple's HD SC Setup.

Also contained in the "Magna Folder" will be Disinfectant 3.5 and the
"EmpowerII Read Me" file. The Read Me contains important information
for upgrading from previous versions of Empower II, as well as details
on changes to Empower II since versions 4.1 and 4.1.1, as well as
4.1.2.
