? [The Croquet Project, SDK v1.0 beta][1]

> Croquet is a powerful [open source][2] software technology that, in the form of the [Croquet Software Developer's Kit][3] (Croquet SDK), can be used by experienced software developers to create and deploy deeply collaborative multi-user online virtual world applications on and across multiple operating systems and devices. Derived from [Squeak][4], the Croquet system features a peer-based messaging protocol that dramatically reduces the need for server infrastructures to support virtual world deployment and makes it easy for software developers to create deeply collaborative applications. [Cobalt][5] is a National Science Foundation-sponsored effort to develop an open source virtual world browser and authoring toolkit application based on the Croquet technology.

> ## Getting Started with the Croquet SDK
>
> ### First Things First
>
> It is important to point out that Croquet is presently in the form
> of a software developer's kit (SDK) and not yet an application that
> can easily be used by end-users. The NSF-sponsored Cobalt effort is
> centered around developing an application supporting the needs of
> end-users. The Croquet SDK, on the other hand, comes complete with a
> few examples that illustrate different features and capabilities of
> the system which the uninitiated often and mistakenly think are
> finished end-user applications.

>
> In order to efficively use the full capabilities of Croquet SDK 1.0,
> you will need to learn how to start and stop Squeak, manipulate
> objects, and examine and change code. To help more people get

> ### Installing the Croquet SDK
>
> Simply unpack the downloaded archive to any convenient location.
> Everything is included within the new directory.

> The virtual machine executable is named Croquet.app. If you double-
> click on the .app without dragging anything on to it, the .app will
> prompt you for an .image file to open. You can also arrange for
> MacOS to use the .app whenever you double-click on the .image file.
> The way to do this is to cctrl-click on the .image and choose Open
> With -> Other. Then select the .app and click the "Always Open With"
> box. Since the default settings on Mac OS do not display the ?.app?
> extension you will may see an application called something like
> Croquet [?]

? [Croquet SDK guide][8]

Earlier pre-release versions of the SDK supported MacOS 9, and could
perform "well even with Pentium II-450s and motherboards/components of
that era as long as they have 256MB of RAM and a recent video card."
([Croquet Project, 2004-10-23][9]), but are missing.

Newer versions are supposedly maintained by <https://www.croquet.io/>
but:

 * Version numbers were reset!
2019-06-26 First Croquet.io release v0.1.0.
2021-11-25 Croquet.io release v1.0.5

 * They seem to make no claim of relationship to the original
Croquet, aside from listing some of its major contributors as
   advisors.
 * It is not downloadable; rather, it is a hosted system that
requires an API key. Price tiers begin with "Free".
