Corel Office for Java is a suite of (office oriented) apps written in
Java for Macintosh. It contains the programs WordPerfect, Quattro,
Presentations, InfoCentral and Novera. Also supports email (POP3 and
IMAP).

 * DL #1: Corel_Office-for-Java-1-img.sit - expands as the original
COJ installer. Note: The installer runs on PPC Macintosh only, but
the installed software is platform independent, and runs on any
classic Mac with a [Java Runtime][1] engine installed.

 * DL #2: Corel-Office-Java-Runtime.sit - extracted from the above
installer, as an easier method of installing COJ onto 68k
Macintosh. COJ runs just as well or badly on 68k Macs too.

I found this (I think totally weird) software on the [Mac OS 8.0 Beta
(Deutsch) CD][2] and thought this has to have a page to itself here at
the MG...

It is very buggy, I think that it may only be an evaluation software
and I did see in the EULA, mention of 30 days. So if it expires on me
next month I'll update this page with that info. If going by the
current date in the screenshots it seems to think I'm living in the
year 19122, so maybe it won't expire for a while longer ![Wink][3]

That said it is the first Java app for classic Mac OSs that I've seen
(to this degree of complexity). This is very pre-release alpha quality
software. AFAIK, a GM release never eventuated and the Office for Java
project was shelved permanently. Expect crashes and other
unpredictable events while using this software.

[Edit_ October, 2023] Several months since installing this, Corel
Office for Java has not expired, so far.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC

Corel Office for Java requires at least version 1.0 of the Macintosh
Java Runtime installed.
My tests were with [MRJ 1.5.1][1] on SheepShaver running Mac OS 9.0.4
and Basilisk II running Mac OS 8.1, it appears to work OK-ish there.
However, COJ and SheepShaver running 8.1 is not working for me (so
far).

The Window in which Office for Java is running is part of the Applet
Runner application, not the Office for Java applet running within.
This means that the Close box in the upper-left corner of the window's
title bar is not recognized by Office for Java, and so you won't get
prompted to save your work if you click the Close box. Remember to
save your work before closing the application window.

Note: There is a lot that doesn't work in this beta. Only WordPerfect
can save documents, for example.

For the (very large) list of known issues, view the included
"readme.html" in a browser.
