A relational database application, FileMaker Pro 4.0 was Claris Corp's
final major software release, only a few months before the company was
dissolved and its assets split between the new Apple company
"[FileMaker Inc][1]" and Apple itself. Version 4.0 now offered a much
more integrated database to web publishing side with built-in CGI and
web server. Previously this was handled by 3rd party software such as
"Lasso". FileMaker Pro 4 databases are mostly compatible with previous
version 3 databases and the .fp3 filename suffix used in Windows
remained the same.
FileMaker Pro 4.0 also integrates with [Claris Home Page 3.0][2]: the former provides a database and the latter web page designing for web published FileMaker Pro databases, all very swish. I found this tutorial which makes it all easy to follow. ? [creatingWebSurvey.pdf][3]
* DL #1: FileMaker Pro 4 installer CD for Macintosh
* DL #2: FileMaker Pro 4.0 installer CD - Mac/Win hybrid installer
set.
* Note: Competitive Trade-Up and Upgrade CD, requiring [previous software][4] install (listed in zipped DL).
* DL #3: FileMaker Pro 4.0v2 Updater (English) ? Updates Worldwide
English release from 4.0v1 to 4.0v2
* DL #4: FileMaker Pro 4.0v3 Updater (English) ? Updates Worldwide
English release from 4.0v2 to 4.0v3 ? Y2K Updates and Improved

* DL #5: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder (Mac)
* DL #6: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder 4.0v3 update (Mac)
* DL #7: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder (Windows)
* DL #8: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder 4.0v2 update (Windows)
* DL #9: FileMaker Pro 4 Binder 4.0v4 update (Windows)
* The Binder is used to "compile" database document files into standalone databases that do not require the user to have a copy of FileMaker Pro application itself. The main limitation of standalone databases is that they are single user only (they cannot be used by more than one person at a time). The Binder creates a cut-down version of FileMaker Pro, without the layout / design or network sharing features, which is "bound" by a binding key to a set of database document files (using the Type / Creator codes on Mac and the filename extension on Windows), but the files are also still usable in normal FileMaker Pro as well. The Mac Binder is used to create a Mac OS 7-9 standalone application. The Windows Binder is used to make a Windows standalone application - the Binder must be run under Windows (not sure of the full requirements, but it works under Windows 95 in VirtualPC and standalone databases work up to at least Windows 8, probably Windows 10 too). You cannot create the Windows standalone application under Mac OS nor vice versa.
* DL #10: FileMaker Pro 4 Password Viewer Gold 2.0
* This can be used to extract the master password from protected FileMaker Pro 4 database documents (as long as that password is normal text characters). Handy if you've forgotten the password to an old database file.
* DL #11: FileMaker Pro 5->4 Reverter
* This small application will attempt to convert a FileMaker Pro 5 database document into a file that can be opened by FileMaker Pro 4. Obviously any newer FileMaker 5 features cannot be converted, but otherwise it does a reasonably good job.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC x86 (Windows)
Separate & FAT installers for 68k & PPC Macintosh - you can install
for both CPU types at same time if wished (important for 68k Macs with
PPC upgrade cards). This software runs under SSW 7.1 to 9.2.2 - It
also runs very well under "Classic" on PPC OS X up to 10.4.11
Windows installers also (2nd DL, hybrid Mac/Win CD)
Runs great on Basilisk II & SheepShaver
Minimum System Requirements:
SSW 7.1 for Macintosh, SSW 7.1.2 for PPC Macintosh
8 MB RAM for PPC Macintosh or 68k Macintosh with Web Companion
enabled.
4 MB RAM for 68k Macintosh without Web Companion enabled.
TCP/IP, AppleTalk or IPX/SPX Network enabled for sharing FileMaker Pro
databases over a network.
M 68020 CPU or newer
I found this (Top DL) on a CD-ROM given to me by a publishing house
(now defunct) in the UK. I have been trying different apps to see what
they do and this is one such app. It seems to be similar to MS Access,
a database app that the user can customise and design their own user
interface. It says it can link via the internet too. I've had a quick
look through and it seems to be "the full monty", impressive. I've
added the serial to the "read me" file.
