If you purchased an Apple External Hard Drive, the drive is ready to
use with your Macintosh, Power Mac, or Performa computer. It has
already been formatted, initialized, and partitioned with La Cie
Limited'sSilverlining disk management software, and has also been
loaded with several shareware and demo software programs. You should
make backup copies of these programs as soon as possible if you'd like
to keep them. Backing up only takes a few minutes and will safeguard
the software on your hard drive.
The most important items on your hard drive are the latest disk images
of Silverlining. Silverlining is fully compliant with SCSI Manager 4.3
as used in AV Quadras, Power Macintoshes, and '040 Macs running System
7.5. In order to bring you the latest versions of our software, please
compare the version of Silverlining found on the bundled floppy
diskettes, with the version found on the hard disk. If there is a
newer version on the hard disk, please make a diskette copy of the new
software from the disk image found on the hard disk. You can use Disk
Copy 4.2 to copy the image onto a diskette.
Silverlining is disk management software from La Cie Limited that
allows you to set create multiple disk partitions, and to protect your
data by allowing you to password protect your volumes to control
access and mounting. Silverlining and the Silverlining Lite control
panel also allow you to conveniently use almost any SCSI storage
peripheral with your Macintosh, Performa, and Power Mac. This is
especially important if you plan to use drives from several vendors,
or removable storage drives such as SyQuest and magneto optical
drives.
Apple's HD SC Setup only allows you to set up a single Macintosh
partition and provides no data protection capability. Even more
limiting is that Apple HD SC Setup will only work with certain Apple
hard drives, while Silverlining will allow you to use almost any drive
with your system. HD SC Setup is also incompatible with SyQuest and
magneto optical drives.
Please refer to your External Hard Drive User's Guide for complete
information about using your hard drive. Please refer to the Getting
Started brochure or Silverlining User's Guide for instructions on
using Silverlining with your drive.
### DIAGNOSING AND REPAIRING YOUR HARD DRIVE
Hard drives can occasionally be damaged by faulty applications and by
some repeated use and handling. If you see a message on your monitor
reporting that your hard drive is damaged or unreadable, you can use
Apple's Disk First Aid to try to diagnose and correct the problem. If
Disk First Aid is unable to diagnose or repair your hard drive, try
using the test capabilities of Silverlining.
If neither Disk First Aid, nor Silverlining is able to repair your
drive, then your drive might have to be reinitialized. There are also
other diagnostic applications, such as Norton Disk Doctor, that may
assist you in isolating problems.
IMPORTANT: Reinitializing your hard drive completely erases all data
on your Apple External Hard Drive! To reinitialize your Apple External
Hard Drive, follow the instructions in the Silverlining documentation.
IMPORTANT: Remember to backup your data before using any of the
formatting and initializing capabilities of Silverlining. Backing up
your drive should be part of your daily routine to prevent costly
mishaps.
