Macintosh Appearance Manager & SDK
This gives Macs running a Mac OS earlier than version 8.0 (or 8.5 for
1.0.4) the ability to run apps and games which require the Appearance
Manager to be installed.
> The Appearance Manager represents Apple's newest innovations in
> interface development and several programs, including PandoCalendar,
> require the Appearance Manager to operate. If you are using Mac OS
> 8.0 or later, you already have the Appearance Manager. and can stop
> reading now.
>
> For those of you using Mac OS 7.1 - 7.6.1 [...] When you restart,
> your Macintosh will have the Mac OS 8 Platinum Appearance. This will
> change the way windows, buttons, Finder icons, and the menubar look.
> The menus will also stay down when you click on their titles.

1st download is version 1.0.1, SDK 1.0.3. This version is already
included with OS 8 & 8.1, so there is no need to install on these
systems.
2nd download is version 1.0.3, SDK 1.0.4. This version mentions OS 8 &
8.1 (NOT 8.5 or later) compatibility, however few apps require this
version, so 1.0.1 is usually sufficient enough. It also includes a few
developer goodies.

> A The best way to answer these questions is with a table:

Version 1.0.3, SDK 1.0.4 (2nd download) has a very extensive ReadMe
file included with it that I recommend reading before installing.
Runs well under Basilisk II and SheepShaver*.
In Mini vMac (Mac II variation) there are visible conflicts with this
emulator and it appears to be unusable.
*In SheepShaver; Only use if running Mac OS 7.5.3 to 7.6.1 (Old World
ROM) ? otherwise, not required.
Important:
1. In System 7, Remove the "WindowShade" and "Color" control panels from your "Control Panels" folder. The functionality of these control panels have been replaced by the "Appearance" control panel and are known to conflict if both are installed.
2. If you have an old version of an interface-altering extension/control panel (Aaron, Kaleidoscope and others) you may wish to disable them (unless more recent than this Extension Manager), as they might conflict with the Appearance Manager.
