Albert? is a nifty little application that can launch AppleScripts by
sending it an e-mail. You can use any e-mail account to send Albert? a
command. Albert looks at the Subject line of each e-mail for the word
"Albert:", then launches the script with the name that follows
"Albert:".
Please take note that Albert? will DELETE any message sent to the
account it checks if the Subject line contains "Albert:"!
---
### How to use it:
Albert? must have a valid POP3 e-mail account to check, and also a
person to send Reply e-mails to. Albert? will ONLY accept e-mail
commands from this person. It can be the same e-mail account that
Albert? checks. If you want Albert? to reply to your commands via
e-mail., a valid SMTP server address is needed also.
Sending Commands:
In order to send a command to Albert?, you must start the subject of
the e-mail with "Albert:" (you can change this to whatever you wish in
the Preferences panel), followed by the name of the script you wish to
launch. These scripts MUST be located in the "Scripts" folder of the
folder Albert? is located (it will make one if there isn't one there
already). An example would be:
"Albert:empty_the_trash"
This will cause Albert? to run the AppleScript called
"empty_the_trash" in the Scripts folder. You can also launch multiple
AppleScripts in one e-mail by separating each script name with a colon
( : ). For example :
"Albert:clean_up_desktop:empty_the_trash"
This would cause Albert? to launch the AppleScript called
"clean_up_desktop" AND the script called "empty_the_trash". You can
ask for a list of all available scripts by sending Albert? the command
"Albert:List". You will then receive an e-mail back with a list of
available AppleScripts to run.
### Changes:
Version 1.2.6 Fixed bug that would not allow you to save preferences
changes unless a reply email was used, even if Authorized Sender was
off.
Version 1.2.5 Has the option to check immediately at launch for
emails. It actually could do this before, but not in a clear way. I
also cleaned up the settings window a bit.
Version 1.2, you can change the command used to tell Albert to launch
AppleScript's to anything you wish. You can optionally turn off the
Authorized Sender option, too.
### Caveats:
Yes, Outlook CAN run scripts automatically, but not as efficiently as
Albert. It can't run them based solely off the name, you have to
assign the script to a "rule". Also, it can't send back lists. Also,
please keep in mind that POP3 servers STINK as far as speed and
reliability goes. If you are planning to use Albert in a setting where
the scripts MUST be launched in a timely manner, think again.
All told, you may not find much use for this application. I made it on
a whim.
