Band-Maid are a heavy rock band, although they don't really conform
to any fixed genre, consisting of five Japanese ladies dressed in
variations of Maid Cafe outfits.
I know how this sounds.
However they are all outstanding musicians, and whilst the look
initially draws you in if you're a fan of Japanese women
(i.e. alive), it's the songwriting and the musicianship that keep
you listening. I first heard them in 2019 and it's fair to say
that I don't think a day has gone by (apart from a few days in
hospital but let's skip over that) when I haven't listened to their
music.
They have over 140 songs now I believe, and I can happily listen to
a song for the 1,000th time and still hear something new. This was
initially surprising to me as I've always been an
Oi/Punk/Psychobilly/Rockabilly/Blues sort of bloke and 'new' was
not something I was keen on. I liked, and still like in those
genres, things to sound the same as they always do, with no poncing
about, and yet now I love Band-Maid, who rarely have two songs that
sound similar.
They've made me open minded, and happy, that's got to be worth a
go?
