After a long day at work what better way to relax than by playing
network engineer. Today was the end of my work week and I have the
whole three day weekend to play, so I decided to purchase a 5G home
internet modem from Straight Talk. From what I gather they are
a subsidiary of Verizon and sell the same service sans contract.
The installation was painless and to my surprise you are not locked
behind CGNAT. I was able to connect Miku, this little NetBSD machine, and
with a few tweaks of the firewall she was serving up gopher holes and
web pages without issue.
Unfortunately the speed is nowhere near the theoretical maximum but the
pings are not as bad I thought they would be. I don't think it will
work as a replacement for my cable modem but I do think I will find a
use for it.
