Wisconsin Republican Eric Hovde said in his 2012 U.S. Senate campaign he was totally opposed to abortion rights, but he changed his position in his 2024 run against U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis.

Baldwin claimed July 23, 2024, that Hovde is “100% anti-choice.”

Hovde said in February he supports exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

In April, he said that “women, early on in a pregnancy, should have a right to make a choice.” He added that Wisconsin voters should decide when in a pregnancy abortion should be illegal.

In a July 31 email, Hovde’s campaign said Hovde believes abortion “is a state issue that should be settled via referendum.” The email reiterated support for the three exceptions and a period of time for legal abortions.
