THE DISTRICT
This safe Democratic seat encompasses the city of Milwaukee.
THE NUTSHELL
Longtime U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Milwaukee, is running for an 11th term in November. The state lawmaker turned congresswoman has represented the district since 2005 and is a heavyweight in Wisconsin Democratic politics. She is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Two candidates are vying for the Republican nomination on Aug. 13. Purnima Nath, a management consultant with the backing of U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman and a slate of other GOP elected officials, is campaigning on cracking down on illegal immigration. Tim Rogers, a Milwaukee native, is also running as a Republican. He says he’s in the race to bring clean drinking water to the city of Milwaukee. “I am running for political office not to complain about the situation, but to get involved and make the changes needed,” he says on his campaign website. Independent candidate Robert Raymond, an attorney, is also on the ballot.
