Wisconsin Watch seeks an audience and membership director to lead our audience development and membership growth efforts. This role is crucial in expanding our reach, deepening connections with our audience and fostering a vibrant community around our journalism.

The audience and membership director will lead a team across our website, social media, newsletters, and other news products to connect with an expanded and more diverse audience while developing and implementing strategies that grow a loyal Wisconsin Watch audience in a manner that leads to increased revenue. The director of audience and membership will report to the director of engagement, growth and innovation.

Job duties:

Develop and execute audience growth and loyalty strategies

Work with the director of engagement, growth and innovation to set strategy and lead audience development and digital marketing initiatives to build awareness, drive traffic, deepen engagement and reach underserved audiences.

Set, establish and own goals and KPIs for growth and engagement across newsletters, social channels, SEO, and membership.

Work with director of engagement, growth and innovation to develop new product initiatives, including email newsletters, and seek out and manage potential third-party channels for growth.

Lead search and social strategies to build consumer awareness, grow audience and deepen engagement with audiences.

Oversee the production and execution of our editorial newsletter portfolio and targeted campaigns.

Oversee organic and paid email list growth strategy, including managing relevant contractors.

Help develop and implement audience growth strategies for Milwaukee NNS and News414.

Lead the design and execution of a full-funnel strategy for growing membership revenue (donors giving less than $1,000/year)

Lead membership strategy, including donor retention and donor conversation strategy and tactics.

Manage membership contractors to help develop effective messaging for campaigns, and manage onsite, newsletter and social media calls-to-action.

Experiment with product and messaging strategies that convert loyal readers into members and one-time donors into recurring members.

Lead regular member communication and engagement efforts, including production of regular member and subscriber updates and automated welcome and renewal messaging.

Coordinate with chief revenue officer and development director on fundraising strategy and efforts.

Help develop and implement membership growth strategies for Milwaukee NNS.

Lead team of audience development and membership staff and contractors

Manage team of production staff.

Act as SEO newsroom point person and ensure proper execution of SEO workflows for the newsroom, including training, documentation and support.

Provide coaching to staff about best practices on digital/social platforms.

Manage audience and membership contractors, including News Revenue Hub and Synesthesia Marketing.

Location: The director of audience and membership should be located in Wisconsin, preferably in the greater Madison or greater Milwaukee areas.
