5 things to know and do this week in Milwaukee: Jan. 16 to Jan. 20 [1]

It’s Monday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about. If you would like your event to be considered for this column, please submit your news by clicking here at least two weeks in advance.

If you’ve had issues connecting to affordable and reliable internet, you can share your story at community meetings Monday and Wednesday and brainstorm solutions. (NNS file photo)

1. Community conversation on affordable internet access: Monday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 18

If you have ever had an issue accessing or keeping quality, affordable internet, or if you have ideas on how your internet experience can be better, you can share your story at these two community conversations on affordable internet access. Spanish and English speakers are welcome.

There are two listening sessions this week. The first one is 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16 at United Community Center, located at 1028 S. 9th St. The second is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, located at 1700 W. Fond Du Lac Ave.

2. 6th Aldermanic District town hall: Tuesday, Jan. 17

Alderwoman Milele Coggs invites residents of the 6th Aldermanic District to January’s town hall meeting to discuss district concerns and announce winners of the 2022 Dr. James G. White 6th District Difference Makers Awards. The meeting runs from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the Martin Luther King Branch Library, located at 310 W. Locust St.

3. Public Allies Wisconsin partner information session: Wednesday, Jan. 18

Leaders of local nonprofits are invited to learn more about what it means to host a Public Ally. There will be a light breakfast and tea served. The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 on the second floor conference room at Arts @ Large, located at 1100 S. 5th St.

4. Annual Havenwoods Neighborhood Improvement District meeting: Thursday, Jan. 19

The Havenwoods Neighborhood Improvement District, or NID, exists to convene neighbors and organize to improve the Havenwoods neighborhood. The annual NID meeting happens this week from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. this Thursday, Jan. 19 at Havenwoods State Forest, located at 6141 N. Hopkins St.

“Art Against the Odds” is an exhibition of art made by people who are incarcerated and runs until March 11. The opening reception is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19 at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, located at 273 E. Erie St.
