Senate likely to kill bill to allow early counting of absentee ballots despite GOP support in Assembly [1]

[]

Date: 2022-03-08

MADISON - Senate Republicans are unlikely to send Gov. Tony Evers legislation that would allow absentee ballots to be counted the day before an election to avoid late-night tallies that have fueled false claims of widespread voter fraud in Wisconsin.

The measure, which Evers signaled Monday he supports, would have given clerks in Milwaukee more time in the 2022 midterms to count absentee ballots, helping to prevent the situation that former President Donald Trump used as a basis to falsely claim that cheating robbed him of an election win in 2020.
