Stunting in focus: challenges, successes, and a path forward to 2030 [1]
[]
Date: 2024-11-21
Organizers: The webinar is hosted by WHO, UNICEF, and SUN Movement
Background
Childhood stunting is one of the most significant barriers to human development, leading to lasting impacts on cognition, education, and productivity. Stunted children are at higher risk of developmental delays, reduced academic performance, and lower adult wages. The long-term consequences extend into adulthood, increasing the risk of chronic diseases and maternal health risks, such as obstructed labour. Stunting affects approximately 1.3 million children globally each year, contributing to significant economic losses. With 149 million children under five affected globally, the 2025 Global Nutrition Target will not be met and stunting remains a major challenge in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2.2, which calls for ending malnutrition by 2030.
This webinar will explore the complex causes of stunting, from poor maternal nutrition and inadequate child feeding practices to chronic infections and socio-economic inequalities. By highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive solutions–improved maternal care, nutrition education, and access to clean water and sanitation–this session emphasizes the importance of addressing stunting.
The webinar aims to:
Highlight the current progress and identify barriers to achieving the Global Nutrition Targets on stunting by 2025.
Present the suggested extension of the WHA Global Nutrition Targets to align with the 2030 agenda.
Showcase best practice examples from countries to inspire others in their journey to commitment-making.
Focus attention on high-impact interventions needed to improve stunting.
Describe key resources that countries can use to address stunting relevant to the scope of the Paris Nutrition for Growth Summit and the SUN Global Gathering in 2025.
