Advancing RSV surveillance and disease burden as part of an expanded Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System [1]
[]
Date: 2024-04-22
Background
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a significant cause of acute lower respiratory infections and a leading cause of hospitalization in infants and young children. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been implementing the integration of RSV into the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) platform since 2016, with the objective of providing epidemiologic and virologic evidence that informs the introduction of RSV vaccines and monoclonal antibodies. The WHO RSV surveillance project based on GISRS, is being implemented in 25 countries across all six WHO regions. The in-person WHO meeting on Advancing RSV surveillance and Disease Burden as part of an expanded GISRS in Lima, Peru, will include laboratory and surveillance focal points from countries participating in WHO RSV surveillance project, RSV Reference Laboratories, international RSV experts, partners and other interested entities.
Scope and objectives
The purpose of this meeting is to conduct a comprehensive review of progress, achievements, and the operationalization of standards for the seamless integration of RSV surveillance within an expanded and integrated GISRS, with specific objectives to:
Review RSV surveillance and Burden of Disease (BoD) data, and assess progress and achievements of the WHO RSV surveillance project.
Review RSV seasonality, virus evolution, and genetic changes, and transmission to understand the factors that influence its occurrence and severity.
Discuss strategic and operational considerations for the integration and sustainability of RSV surveillance in an expanded GISRS.
Agenda
22-23 April 2024
Review the data, methodologies, analysis, and findings pertaining to RSV BoD estimation. This will serve as a platform to bring together national experts from priority Low- and Middle-Income countries (LMICs).
24-26 April 2024
Review existing methodologies and protocols to work towards harmonizing surveillance efforts, enhancing data comparability, and fostering collaboration between different stakeholders. This will gather laboratory and surveillance experts from all 25 project countries, RSV reference laboratories, RSV experts, and other partners.
Analyze operational considerations for integrating RSV, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 surveillance, recognizing the interconnected nature of respiratory viruses.
Discuss ways forward for RSV surveillance and its long-term sustainability. This includes strategies to overcome challenges, foster collaboration, and secure funding for sustained surveillance efforts.
