African concerns to be highlighted at pandemic treaty talks [1]

The stark disparities underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic in the capacity of countries to prevent, prepare for and respond has brought to the world’s attention the need for a pandemic treaty, or for a thorough revision of International Health Regulations. Either would ensure a level legal and political global playing field regarding future pandemics and health emergencies.

A draft text is expected for 1 August 2022. To get there, a country-led, transparent and inclusive and fair procedure is necessary, with full participation of all interested parties, including the meaningful inclusion of non-state actors. From Tuesday, 12 April, WHO is hosting a global public consultation, which can be accessed either through livestreaming sessions on 12-13 April and 16-17 June, or in writing. Called the World Together, the consultation is guided by an especially convened Intergovernmental Negotiating Body to draft and negotiate a WHO convention, agreement or other international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. It is open to any citizen interested in expressing an opinion on the topic.
