Stories of what Verite News editor-in-chief Terry Baquet and his family lost during and after Hurricane Katrina inspired What Was Lost, so it was an obvious choice to have him open the series with one of his anecdotes.
He chose to share the story of how he lost an entire pond that was in his backyard and the hundreds of koi fish that used to swim around in it.
Since the project launched, New Orleanians have told us stories about losing childhood hallmarks, awards for climate climate reporting, neighborhood sounds and more to Katrina. The series has become an opportunity for residents to recall what New Orleans was before the historic storm and flood caused by the failure of the federal levee system.
Now, Terry’s essay about the koi pond is available in audio. We hope that you give it a listen or revisit his story, and that it inspires you to share your own with us.
