The city of New Orleans was built by slave labor, made wealthy by the slave trade, and molded by the cultures of enslaved people whose lineage traces back to the Senegambia and Congo-Angola regions of Africa and to Haiti and Cuba.
Despite their names being recorded in ship logs, on bills of sale, property lists, and wills of succession, the individual and family stories of enslaved people have too often been overlooked, dismissed, or devalued. This effort becomes even more important as political forces seek to erase this history.
As Verite News looks at the impact of slavery and the slave trade on the past, present, and future of New Orleans, we are asking descendants of those early laborers, craftsmen, and culture bearers to share that incredible legacy in hopes of honoring those lives.
