Three journalists have joined Verite News for a yearlong fellowship that will give them an immersive newsroom experience as they cover greater New Orleans. The diverse fellow class comes from a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds and geographic regions.

Now in its fourth year, Verite’s newsroom fellowship program is the main way that the organization achieves part of its mission, which is to train the next generation of journalists from underrepresented communities. Through a combination of real-world experience, professional development and mentorship, the fellows will continue to hone the skills they’ve learned at their college newspapers and journalism programs.

“The fellowship program has allowed Verite to help several early-career journalists jumpstart their careers while producing award-winning work,” said Terry Baquet, Verite’s editor-in-chief. “We are excited to welcome a new class of fellows and hope that they will learn and grow as journalists and people.”

Here are the journalists who make up the fourth class of Verite news fellows:

Aliana Mediratta is a news reporter originally from San Francisco who graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in gender studies and writing. Aliana was the managing news editor of a student-run publication at WashU, where she led a team of writers and reported on stories about higher education, political protests and local crime.

Robert Stewart is a news and feature writer with Verite News focusing on criminal justice and immigration. He comes to Verite from Maryland, where he wrote stories on local elections, immigration, business, national security and family legacy. Robert has also reported from the Caribbean and Latin America. His stories have been picked up by the Baltimore Sun, the Baltimore Banner, Maryland Matters and other outlets. He has a master’s degree in journalism and in Persian language from the University of Maryland. Robert has lived in and traveled through Central Asia and Eastern Europe, and he’s translated Persian and German. He is also proficient in Romanian, and he’s a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

Madhri Yehiya is a proud New England native who first fell in love with journalism while serving as campus news editor and chair of the board at The Daily Free Press, Boston University’s independent student newspaper. Madhri recently graduated with a master’s degree from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, where she specialized in investigative and data-based reporting. She previously interned on CNN’s Quest Means Business show team in New York City and hopes to report on public health in New Orleans while at Verite News.
