Event to Feature Screenings, Food Distribution, and On-Site Services at The Fillmore
New Orleans & Company invites the public to a Free Hospitality Health Fair on Tuesday, June 24, at The Fillmore (6 Canal Street) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This community-focused event sponsored by Verite News, Ochsner Health, LCMC, 504HealthNet, InclusivCare, and other local health organizations aims to close gaps in healthcare access and food insecurity while championing the power of prevention. While it is aimed at the hospitality industry it is open and free to the public.
Guests will have access to an array of free health screenings provided by trusted medical professionals. Ochsner Health will be on site offering blood pressure checks, prostate cancer screenings, and HIV, STI, and syphilis testing.
“As physicians and researchers, we’re concerned by the number of younger patients we see being treated for colorectal cancer. In 2020, nearly one in every eight colorectal cancers were diagnosed in people younger than 50. The overall incidence of colorectal cancer is decreasing, but diagnoses for younger people are rising. It’s serious enough that the screening recommendations were updated in 2021. Adults with an average risk of colorectal cancer should begin screenings at age 45, but if you have a family history of colorectal cancer you should discuss earlier screening options with your doctor,” said Yvens Laborde, MD, chief community medical officer, Ochsner Health.
Dr. Laborde also emphasized the importance of proactive monitoring:
“Blood pressure checks are an important part of maintaining overall health. Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure, and many don’t even know it. Early detection through regular monitoring is crucial because damage from high blood pressure can occur even without obvious symptoms. It carries with it a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, dementia and other serious health issues.”
Prevention isn’t just possible—it’s powerful
To further support attendees, the event will offer free food distribution—a direct response to nutritional insecurity, which has been identified by state health officials as a major driver of chronic illness. Parking is complimentary at the Hilton Whale Lot, and InclusivCare will provide free shuttle 11am- 4pm service throughout the event.
Spanish-speaking translators and EMS personnel will also be available on-site to ensure accessibility and safety for all. Free PJ’s Coffee and Lemonade will also be available. There are no requirements for attendance—no ID, insurance, or pre-registration is necessary. The event is open to everyone, especially those working in New Orleans’ vital hospitality industry, which remains a cornerstone of the city’s culture and economy.
This free health fair eliminates barriers and paves the way to improved health for those who frequently go unnoticed. We’re reaching out to people where they are—literally—and guiding them to take their first step. Ochsner will also feature their inflatable colon tunnel at the entrance. A fun and engaging educational exhibit designed to spark important conversations about colorectal cancer and the importance of early detection.
Now in its third iteration, the Hospitality Health Fair continues to grow in scope and impact. For a full list of participating vendors and the services they’ll offer, visit Verite News.
