New Orleans voter guide: Fall 2023 election [1]

[]

Date: 2023-10-02

(Updated Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023)

Louisiana’s 2023 gubernatorial election ended Saturday (Oct. 14) with an outright primary victory for Attorney General Jeff Landry. Landry avoided a runoff election, defeating his top Democratic opponent, former State Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson, with 52% of the vote — double Wilson’s share of 26%.

Turnout for the Oct. 14 primary was historically low, with only 36% of eligible voters statewide casting their ballots. In Orleans Parish, it was just 27%.

In contrast, the 2019 gubernatorial primary brought out 46% of voters statewide and 39% of Orleans Parish voters. Turnout rose to 51% statewide and 49.5% in Orleans Parish for the November 2019 runoff election between Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards and Republican Eddie Rispone. High turnout in the heavily Democratic parish was seen as critical to Edwards reelection that year.

Now, with the highest-profile 2023 race in the books, the state and city may see similarly low turnout in the upcoming Nov. 18 runoff election. Still, several key statewide offices — including Secretary of State, Attorney General and state Treasurer — and some legislative districts remain undecided.

Below is a list of all the races and constitutional amendments that will appear on ballots in Orleans Parish. (Incumbents are listed in bold font.)
