Upcoming Back to School Drives in NOLA [1]

Families lined up early Saturday morning at Joe W. Brown Park Recreation Center to take advantage of the free school supplies that were being given out at the Back to School Boogaloo presented by Children’s Hospital New Orleans, NOLA Public Schools, Agenda for Children and New Orleans East Hospital.

In addition to free school supplies, attendees received free immunizations, haircuts, and health resources including free dental kits. The event also featured a live band, DJ, food, games and snoballs.

The 650 bags of school supplies were all gone before noon said an event vendor.

“I’m a mom of four,” Reginique Okins said. “It helps me eliminate the long school supply list, and also you get to get all type[s] of resources that you don’t get to get on a daily basis.”

Also on Saturday, the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale, in partnership with the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission, held its Tools for School and Health Fair event at the Tremé Recreation Community Center. Families received book bags with school supplies. The event also featured immunizations, dental, vision and hearing screenings and blood pressure and glucose testing.

“We’re more than just partying and having fun,” said Lisa Diggs, president of the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale. “We like to make an impact on the communities throughout the city of New Orleans.”
