9/11/2001: Out of the Devastation, an Outpouring of Support [1]

U.S. Deputy Representative to NATO’s Military Committee Sean Flynn Recounts the Support of the Alliance after the September 11 Attacks
Within a day of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the then 19 NATO Allies convened an emergency session to invoke Article 5 for the first, and only, time in the history of the Alliance. This founding principle states that an attack against one Ally is an attack against all.
At that time, Sean Flynn was a first lieutenant in the New York Army National Guard deployed in response to the attack as part of Operation Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan.
More than two decades later, as the Deputy Military Representative to the NATO Military Committee, Brigadier General Sean Flynn shares how – out of the devastation of those attacks – he will always remember the outpouring of support from his fellow New Yorkers, citizens from throughout the United States, and our NATO Allies.
Today, amidst evolving challenges, NATO remains as unified and agile as ever. The indispensable Alliance spans 32 countries across Europe, the United States and Canada, and continues to stand shoulder to shoulder to protect our people and values.
