The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), passed by the U.S. Congress in 1990, provides accommodations for people with disabilities, if necessary, so that they can study or work.

The ADA also provides architectural remedies. Buildings and public spaces must eliminate barriers to access for people with disabilities.

Similar laws have been passed in other countries, from the United Kingdom to Mongolia. The United States, whose efforts in this area are led by State Department Special Advisor on International Disability Rights Sara Minkara, encourages others to codify such protections.

Learn how these laws and policies protect people with disabilities while boosting economies and societies.
