Cherry blossom trees symbolize enduring U.S.-Japan ties [video] [1]

In 1912, Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki made a gift of more than 3,000 cherry blossom trees to the United States.

The cherry trees surrounding the Tidal Basin in Washington are symbols of the enduring friendship between the United States and Japan. Today, they attract 1.5 million visitors a year, and an annual Cherry Blossom Festival honors both American and Japanese cultures.
