This month, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken delivered video remarks during the 2022 Global Ties U.S. National Meeting, emphasizing the importance of people-to-people exchanges in advancing U.S. foreign policy goals.

To our @GlobalTiesUS member organizations—citizens, communities, civil society groups, businesses, and more—I’m grateful for everything you do to support our international exchange programs across the United States. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Lee Satterfield, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Professional and Cultural Exchanges Stacy White, and the Director of the Office of International Visitors Anne Grimes also delivered remarks. They outlined the important citizen diplomacy work of the Global Ties Network, recognized the resilience and creativity exhibited in the implementation of international exchange programs, and encouraged the network to look forward to the future of exchanges as they return to in-person programming.

The Global Ties U.S. National Meeting is the premier gathering of private-sector organizations implementing the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and includes advocates and leaders in the international exchange field from across the United States as well as U.S. Department of State staff. The meeting is an opportunity to gain high-level insights on trends affecting international exchanges, engage in in-depth professional development opportunities, and strengthen public-private partnerships.

From arranging an online photojournalism @StateIVLP project to hosting virtual cooking demonstrations for Thanksgiving, @GlobalTiesUS members found creative ways to connect while staying thousands of miles apart. Thank you for your work facilitating citizen-to-citizen diplomacy. https://t.co/VQv4lzrQgf — Liz Allen (@GPA_AS) March 17, 2022

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Global Ties Network has adapted and innovated with new technologies and tools to make international exchange programs, specifically the IVLP, more accessible and inclusive. The 2022 National Meeting focused on the future of exchanges with the theme of moving exchange forward.

Each year, Global Ties U.S. recognizes leaders in citizen diplomacy and international exchange for outstanding work in the field. Disability rights activist Susan Sygall and Washington, DC-based organization Life Pieces to Masterpieces received the 2022 Global Ties U.S. Citizen Diplomat Award for their deep commitment to public diplomacy and their social impact on communities in the United States and abroad. Mehwish Abbasi of Pakistan and Adrian Lasimbang of Malaysia received the 2022 Global Ties U.S. IVLP Alumni Award for Social Innovation and Change for their work in empowering marginalized communities to create equitable and inclusive strategies to address climate change.

Even as the global pandemic continued in 2021, @GlobalTiesUS members helped more than 4,000 participants in 177 countries and 100 American communities experience international exchange opportunities. #ExchangeForward https://t.co/Z8BNPKaTjt — Ned Price (@StateDeptSpox) March 17, 2022
