The Operational Performance Group delivers functions that facilitate the design, evaluation, and improvement of services across the University, and business partnering services to Chancellery.

This position is a key role within Service Experience and Design (SED) at the University of Melbourne.

About the role

As Senior Design Lead, you will lead and inspire the practice of Human-centred Design mindset and methods on projects and initiatives within the Digital Design & Service Experience (DDSE) team, for designing and improving the experiences of and services to students, staff and academics. You will support the Design Manager with the execution of design performance and delivery within the Centre of Excellence in Design for the University.

Combine strategic thinking and ‘doing’ (with the support of the team) to create change

Create change and build meaningful experiences through improving existing services or designing new ones

Work with teams to help them define and understand the right problem to solve

Use human-centred problem-solving approaches to build and test solutions

Understand the needs and behaviours of the people you’re designing with and for, to make sure that solutions are fit for purpose and meet their needs

About you

You like to untangle complexity to find the simplicity amongst the noise. You’re a keen problem-solver and enjoy collaborating in cross–disciplinary teams to generate fresh thinking, activate big ideas and help stretch and build the capability of your team as you go.

You will further have:

(Desirable but not essential) A tertiary qualification which may be in one of the following fields of study – Business, Design, Social Sciences, Marketing, Anthropology, Psychology, Systems Thinking

Practical experience and broad knowledge of the practice of Human-centred Design and specifically Service Design (3+ years)

Solid understanding of Design Thinking and HCD methodologies and a true passion for humans with an ability to engage and advocate for these methods across a range of stakeholders in University

A demonstrated ability to – frame a problem, propose a variety of problem-solving approaches, design discovery research using a wide variety of tools (not just interviews), synthesise quantitative and qualitative data to create insight (making the complex simple), run ideation session to create concepts, prototype and test those concepts in the context of the University’s feasibility and viability, and work with others to deliver measurable solutions.
