About the role:

The Australian Epilepsy Project (AEP, epilepsyproject.org.au) is an exciting large-scale research programme that has recently received 5-year funding though the MRFF Frontiers Initiative. The AEP aims to change the lives of people with epilepsy by providing access to advanced diagnostic testing. Using MRI, neuropsychology, and genetics data, we are developing machine-learning based tools to better predict disease course and select optimal treatments.

The AEP seeks enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals, who have a sense of curiosity about how the brain works, are passionate about translating clinical research into practice, and who are committed to improving the lives of people with epilepsy.

An opportunity for a Research Assistant is now available. In this role you will perform analysis of human MRI data, contribute to development of image processing methods, and assist with results preparation for scientific publication. As part of the Florey Neuroimaging Theme research group you will also be involved in a range of other boutique projects, such as simultaneous EEG-fMRI and analysis of clinical cases. You will work within a diverse team of clinicians, neuroimaging researchers and physicists/engineers, and liaise with project partners in the clinical trials, public hospital and academic sectors.

Key responsibilities include:

Acquire imaging and survey data in project participants, according to study protocols

Apply data processing and analysis to human MRI

Contribute to the development of software tools for data analysis and report generation.

Manage databases containing relevant study records and activity

Conduct agreed tasks semi-independently and co-ordinate with others in your team

Take ownership and initiative ofagreed research project activities and deadlines

Attend and contribute to research team meetings, including presentation of cases and results

This role is fixed-term, full-time for 12 months (with potential for a continuing role). Flexible working arrangements will be considered. This role will be paid in the range of Research Assistant 2 ($70,213 per annum) to Research Assistant 5 ($80,890 per annum).

About you:

You are positive, keen to learn, and possess strong attention to detail. You work effectively on your own and as part of a team. You will have a Bachelor of Science (with Honours or Masters), or an equivalent degree.

Experience in the following is essential:

1+ years employment as a Research Assistant

Experience in neuroscience, imaging or epilepsy research

Experience in the following is desirable:

Experience with recruitment and assessment of human research participants.

Experience with neuroimaging software and/or use of scientific programming tools (such as MATLAB, Python, or R).

Evidence of neuroscience research experience such as a contribution to peer-reviewed scientific
