About Legal and risk
Legal and Risk delivers high-quality, integrated, expertise-based professional services and advice to facilitate agile decision making and enable external compliance in support of the University’s operations and purpose.
The Information Governance Services team administers key elements of the University’s regulatory framework and is overall responsible for ensuring good information governance practices are embedded in behaviours, systems and processes across the University.
About the Role
As the Freedom of Information Lead, you will provide expert freedom of information case management, consulting and advice. As a senior member of our team, you will support the functions of the University's Freedom of Information Officer by managing requests for access to documents under current legislation.
In this role, you will work closely with stakeholders at all levels across the University and will promote a compliance-by-design philosophy and proactively create or contribute to University compliance frameworks for information, data and records.
In a typical week at work, you may:
deliver expert case management of requests for access to documents under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Vic) within strict legislated timeframes. This will include managing multiple complex topical requests concurrently, assessing applications, consulting with internal and external stakeholders, and exercising significant judgement in the application of exemptions and in the drafting of decisions and advice
develop and deliver expert advice on freedom of information legislation and the University's compliance obligations
develop and implement of a program of internal and external engagement that will increase awareness of and compliance with information governance responsibilities across the University
Please note, this is a fixed-term opportunity available for 1 year.
About You
You will be an expert in interpreting and applying legislation in a complex organisational context and advising others on the application of legislation to new or complex situations. You will have a highly collaborative and team-orientated work style, and be committed to high performance, best practice and excellence in service delivery. You will also be an enthusiastic, energetic and self-motivated person.
Ideally, you will further have:
A postgraduate qualification and extensive experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training in a relevant area.
Expert knowledge of domestic legislation and practices regarding freedom of information and the ability to translate this knowledge into practical advice, tools and programs.
Demonstrated ability to integrate knowledge of internal and external regulatory requirements with operational requirements and objectives of a large organisation with a diverse range of functions.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present information appropriately to a variety of audiences.
Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, using advanced judgement and evidence-based advice and guidance, with significant experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with staff at all levels of an organisation, to influence others and negotiate outcomes persuasively.
