The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) provides high-quality, innovative teaching and learning programs, research and consulting in the School of Communication and the School of International Studies and Education, using a strong practice orientation focusing on technology, creativity and internationalism. Our “FASS 2027” Strategy will continue to guide our critical decisions and future directions during a time of great challenges in the sector, and build upon our distinctive identity amongst HASS Faculties.

We are seeking to appoint an Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) to lead teaching and learning development in FASS in collaboration with the Dean and Faculty Executive. The Associate Dean will provide leadership, and strategic and operational direction, and manage all teaching and learning related matters and activities.

About the role

The role of Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) requires creative and strategic thinking, strong leadership skills as well as effective collaboration across the other Executive Portfolios to help cultivate a robust and stimulating intellectual environment for students and staff, where viewpoint diversity and heterodox perspectives can challenge current orthodoxies in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

You will manage and oversee the development and implementation of innovative University teaching and learning policies and Faculty strategies in undergraduate and postgraduate course work, applying research-based theory and proven design principles to create engaging, transformative course content and improve quality

With responsibility for leadership and Academic performance, you will positively motivate and lead staff in a changing environment, and ensure collaboration with other portfolios.

In an increasingly competitive global market the engagement of staff to deliver rewarding and embedding new approaches to teaching, programs and structures, alongside the implementation of strategies to increase the Faculty’s international student enrolments and brand reputation will also be key responsibilities.

Key expected outcomes

Success in working with the Dean to at align UTS and Faculty strategy

Development of a high performing culture, particularly in relation to innovative and quality in teaching and learning

Evidence of transformational change within portfolio particularly in relation staff innovation in teaching and learning

Adoption of innovative teaching & learning approaches and changes to current practices in curriculum development

Extensive experience in leading and managing innovative and modern curriculum development, implementation and evaluation, with knowledge of contemporary flexible learning approaches in higher education settings, including the use of information and computer-based technologies in teaching and learning.

Superior organisational and management skills and ability to work with and lead a range of staff in a demanding and changing environment

Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with a range of staff in a complex environment

A strong record of academic leadership in a discipline related to those housed in FASS

Ability to develop and implement strategies that promote excellence in all areas of the portfolio

A vision and direction for teaching and learning activities in the Faculty, demonstrating demonstrate capacity to think strategically and to act tactically based on organisational priorities and objectives.

Capacity to identify new opportunities and build collaborative relationships.

Demonstrated commitment to promoting a culture of viewpoint diversity and heterodox perspectives in a scholarly environment

About You



You will be able to demonstrate:

Extensive experience in leading and managing innovative and modern curriculum development, implementation and evaluation, with knowledge of contemporary flexible learning approaches in higher education settings, including the use of information and computer-based technologies in teaching and learning.

Superior organisational and management skills and ability to work with and lead a range of staff in a demanding and changing environment

Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with a range of staff in a complex environment

A strong record of academic leadership in a discipline related to those housed in FASS

Ability to develop and implement strategies that promote excellence in all areas of the portfolio

You will hold a PhD in a cognate discipline relevant to the Faculty and be appointable at Professorial level.

Terms & Conditions

Remuneration

A competitive base salary will be on offer to the chosen candidate. This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

Appointment Term

This appointment will be on a three year fixed term, full-time basis which, on conclusion, offers reversion to a substantive Professor level position on a continuing, full time basis.

The salaries and conditions of employment of the academic staff of the University are regulated by the UTS Academic Staff Collective Agreement 2018. The salaries and conditions of employment of the senior staff of the University are regulated by the UTS Senior Staff Group Collective Agreement 2013.
