The University of Canberra is a dynamic university with great ambition. The University partners with government, business and industry locally and internationally to challenge the status quo through the pursuit of best practice in teaching, learning and research. UC’s place-based identity ensures that it exists to serve Australia’s capital community and its surrounding region with a strong impact on the nation. The university’s continued success has resulted in UC being recognised as number one in the world for our activities aimed at reducing inequalities in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings (2021), and as Australia’s fastest rising university and one of the fastest rising in the world in the most recent QS Rankings, 2021.

National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) is regarded as one of the world’s foremost centres of excellence for microsimulation, modelling and policy evaluation. The Centre undertakes independent and impartial research that contributes to national policy design and analysis. The work of NATSEM has expanded substantially over recent years, with the Centre now looking to grow its contribution to policy leadership and the Australian Public Service (APS) even further. We are currently seeking…

We are currently seeking applications for the position of Senior Research Fellow to join the NATSEM team and support two large projects it is delivering on behalf of the Australian Government. This is a rare opportunity for an early- to mid-career academic or PhD-qualified professional to apply their skills in complex microsimulation modelling to real world policy problems.

The projects the Senior Research Fellow will be working on are:

1. Evaluation of the Defence Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2018-2023 and Continuous Improvement Framework Monitoring and Evaluation System project for the Department of Defence.

2. Complex modelling of higher education data for the Department of Education, Skills and Employment.

Reporting to the NATSEM Director, you will be required to assist with economic modelling and dynamic microsimulation modelling. You will also be responsible for updating a data management plan for the Defence Mental Health project.

We are seeking a self-motivated, dynamic and collegiate researcher who will complement NATSEM’s existing research and evaluation capability and strengthen our focus on economic and population modelling. The position is funded for two years and is linked to the timeframes of the projects referred to above.

To be successful for this opportunity you will hold a PhD in economic and statistical modelling or a similar/relevant discipline or have equivalent experience, and you will have experience in programming in R, SAS or STATA and have knowledge of, or the ability to learn, complex dynamic microsimulation modelling techniques.

Due to the need to analyse Defence personnel data, Australian citizenship and a baseline security clearance (preferred) or the ability to gain security clearance is required. If the successful candidate needs to obtain a security clearance, any costs associated with doing so will be borne by the University of Canberra.

In return, the University offers excellent conditions and benefits such as flexible, family-friendly policies, on site gym, on site medical services, a supermarket and childcare facilities.

UC’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022 sets a goal to be the national sector leader in equity, diversity, inclusion and access, and the ambitious goals of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategic Plan are designed to ensure that our Indigenous students and staff flourish in a welcoming and culturally safe environment. UC encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disabilities and people from culturally diverse groups.

To be considered for this position your application must include your resume demonstrating your skills and experience in line with the key capabilities outlined in the position description.
