About Operational Performance Group

The Operational Performance Group delivers functions that facilitate the design, evaluation, and improvement of services across the University, and business partnering services to Chancellery.

About the role

On any given day, you may be running co-design sessions, facilitating workshops, helping teams sketch out interfaces, or using design software to mock-up or refine experiences. You’ll work collaboratively as part of a small and skilled team, including research, design, and delivery, and will be crucial in the entire digital design process.

As Senior UX Designer, you will lead and inspire the practice of Human-centred Design mindset and methods in projects and initiatives within the Digital Design & Service Experience (DDSE) team, for designing and improving the overall and most especially the digital experiences of and services to students, staff and academics. You will support the Manager Digital Design in growing the University’s practice of User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design.

About you

You will have a true passion for UX design with an ability to engage and advocate across a range of stakeholders at the University of Melbourne. Further, your high-level design and problem-solving skills allow you to work collaboratively with digital platform owners, developers and academics.

Core Accountabilities

Support the Digital Design & Experience Lead to drive the growth of Digital Design (UX, UI) capability to support all roles in the DDSE team

Deliver outcomes to meet the needs of student, staff, and academic leveraging the opportunities and constraints of technology and strategy

Be a champion for customer experience and work hand-in-hand with Digital Design and Service Experience team.

Assist the Digital Design Manager to lead the end-to-end design process from discovery and research through to testing and iteration.

Help Identify opportunities to improve the user journey and drive an uplift of digital experiences.

Create meaningful end-to-end experiences through a deep understanding of our users and exceptional design execution.

Drive the visual and interactive design strategy that support the team to deliver delightful, consistent and cross-platform experiences.

Translate research into user-centred and cross-platform designs that align with customer needs and business goals.

Explore big ideas before narrowing in on feasible, inventive solutions that consider the small details.

Guide the team by example by defining best practices, end-to-end design processes to ensure high-quality design deliverables.

Rapidly produce multiple concepts and prototypes; knowing when to apply pixel-perfect attention to detail, and when to make low-fi sketches and prototypes.

Lead and facilitate workshops, co-design sessions and design reviews

Work in close collaboration with and support of delivery roles in Business Services and where appropriate delivering capability uplift

You will further have:

Relevant experience in a similar role (5+ years experience)

Knowledge of design and discovery practices involved in digital work, including experience design, agile methodologies and user research.

Knowledge and experience of design systems, prototyping, best practice UX methods and interaction design.

Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise.

Passion and enthusiasm to be part of a team focus on digital experience and helping audiences.

Comfortable working across multiple projects.

Desirable:

Experience in designing voice or chat interfaces and experiences, frontend/backend developer experience including coding, interaction design experience, visual design skills, content management, copy-writing

Education/Qualifications:

Relevant tertiary qualifications or experience as well as experience in a large complex organisation.
