Great opportunity to work in a dynamic University of Melbourne mental health research centre within the auspice of the Phoenix Australia Traumatic Stress Clinic.
Part time (0.6 FTE) parental leave position available for 12 months
Phoenix Australia is seeking to recruit a Research Fellow with clinical mental health experience to manage and contribute to research occurring within the auspice of the Phoenix Traumatic Stress Research Clinic, an initiative of Phoenix Australia, aimed at testing new treatments for people who have experienced trauma. The Research Fellow will be responsible for managing a number of clinical research projects including randomised controlled trials. The Research Fellow will support the intake and treating teams in clinical decision-making and clinical risk management.
The position would ideally suit an experienced mental health clinician with a background and interest in treatment research and / or clinical trial coordination experience.
This is a part-time position and is based at the Phoenix Australia Traumatic Stress Clinic, based at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Park campus. There may be a need at times to work from Phoenix Australia’s main office, in the Department of Psychiatry, the University of Melbourne, located in Carlton. The position will report to the Head of Research, although line management will be delegated.
Key Responsibilities
Research
Manage and contribute to the implementation and running of clinical trials including randomised controlled trials and experimental trials;
Work within a team of researchers and clinicians providing support to the trials and treating teams;
Support intake officers in clinical judgement and risk assessments;
Effectively manage projects and project teams, including project administration, budgeting, reporting, and staff allocation processes across projects;
Conduct assessments or interviews face to face or over the telephone/video conference which may include the administration of semi-structured or structured clinical interviews if required;
Contribute to the coordination and governance of the Phoenix Australia Traumatic Stress Clinic;
Develop and maintain project/trial databases in Excel and SPSS programs; and RedCap;
With guidance from Phoenix statistical consultants, conduct basic descriptive and univariate statistical data analysis (e.g. t-test, ANOVA);
Lead and/or contribute to writing of ethics applications, study protocols, and academic and technical reports and publications.
Knowledge Transfer
Contribute to the dissemination and implementation of best practice in posttraumatic mental health.
If required, contribute to the design, development and delivery of knowledge transfer initiatives and projects.
Undertake other associated tasks as required by the Director of Phoenix Australia
Service and Leadership
Manage and provide supervision as required to Phoenix Australia staff to promote professional development and excellent work performance consistent with Phoenix Australia’s strategic and operational objectives.
Play an active role in fulfilling the vision of Phoenix Australia, including engaging in the range of information sharing, communication and business development.
Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) responsibilities as outlined in section 4.
Staff Supervision
Undertake probationary and performance management processes, ensuring you have regular conversations with your staff and are providing positive and constructive feedback to enhance staff and team performance.
Provide coaching, guidance and support for career planning, ensuring staff have access to appropriate professional development activities.
Understand your responsibilities associated with approving staff leave and ensuring leave is approved in line with operational requirements.
Allocate and monitor workload and address associated issues in a timely manner.
Ensure new staff participate in the university’s induction program and provide a localised work area orientation.
Selection Criteria
Essential
Postgraduate qualifications in health sciences, behavioural sciences or public health.
Clinical qualifications (recognised in Australia) in the field of mental health.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate clinical trials (eg. randomised controlled trials) and manage projects including planning, budgeting, delivery, coordinating staff, and accountability.
Clinical experience in working with clients with mental health disorders or posttraumatic mental health issues using evidence-based approaches.
Clinical experience in mental health assessment and formulation development.
Research experience in the area of mental health including writing ethics applications, and managing research projects.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Proven ability to work autonomously and part of a team, exercising sound professional judgement and seeking advice and consultation when appropriate.
Strong interpersonal, communication and organisational skills.
Demonstrated ability to effectively liaise and with external stakeholders such as referrers.
Demonstrated competency with working with Microsoft suite of products (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Endnote.
Desirable
A PhD or other Doctoral level qualifications.
Evidence of publication in peer review journals or technical report writing.
Knowledge of clinical and research literature in relation to posttraumatic mental health.
Experience in patient management systems.
