LAUNCH: FACTSHEETS ON DECENTRALISATION IN AFRICA [16 August 2021]

By:   []

Date: 2021-08

A growing number of African countries are considering passing or implementing reforms that include some form of decentralisation. There is thus a demand for clear and accessible materials that would assist policymakers, practitioners, students and members of the public to better understand the various concepts and mechanisms associated with decentralisation. The Factsheets on Decentralisation in Africa serve this purpose by answering questions such as: What is the difference between decentralisation and federalism? How are local governments funded? What should their powers be? How effective is the framework for decentralisation provided for by the African Charter on Decentralisation, Local Governance and Local Development? The Factsheets identify, explain and distinguish key concepts on decentralisation in a way that is relevant to the African context.

Moderator: Dr Michelle Maziwisa, DOI

Speakers: Profs Jaap De Visser, Nico Steytler & Tinashe Carlton Chigwata, DOI

Respondent: Ms Lucy Slack, Acting Secretary General of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum
