Global pressures on mangroves and their communities: solutions from conservation and restoration
By: []
Date: 2021-08
Mangroves are an essential element of the resilience of coastal ecosystems and populations to erosion linked to climate change. But they are subject to significant anthropogenic pressures. Between 1980 and 2005, mangrove areas decreased by 20%. Many preservation and restoration programs are conducted in the concerned areas with sometimes very mixed results. The session will focus on the approach that emphasizes the restoration of natural regeneration conditions. After recalling how these ecosystems represent effective solutions for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, the session will consider the most effective restoration methods, and will review the state of knowledge and innovations in this field. It will also focus on preparing young professionals to preserve these ecosystems in the future.
