The Blast: George P. Bush announces support of grassroots Tejano group; election watch in TX-28, HD-78; an update on border wall funding
[]
Date: 2021-09

QUESTIONS REMAIN ON BORDER WALL FUNDING It's been difficult to track how much land has been donated to the state for Gov. Greg Abbott's state-funded border wall, despite promises from his office of transparency.

In July, Texas Monthly wrote that prominent Del Rio businessperson Sergio Galindo had allowed the state to erect a temporary fence on his land. And this week, Abbott spokesperson Renae Eze told USA Today that more than 90 landowners have agreed to have temporary fencing placed on their property.

It is still unclear what mechanism the governor's office is using to build on private property or how many miles of border the land volunteered by these landowners would cover. Abbott's office told lawmakers it has identified 733 miles along the state's southern border that may need some type of barrier. — James Barragán
