TEXAS DEMS LOOK FOR SUPPORT ON DAY TWO IN D.C.

Texas Democrats remain headstrong on their second day in the nation’s capital after breaking quorum in the state House to block Republican-backed voting restriction bills.

Democratic members of the Texas House and Senate gathered for a press conference Wednesday afternoon, where they made their agenda clear: They want the support of their colleagues on Capitol Hill in their fight for voting rights.

“We have several board members who are still in meetings on the Hill right now — meeting with U.S. senators and making the case,” said Rep. Chris Turner, D-Grand Prairie. “There's members attending a subcommittee hearing on voting rights this afternoon as well.”

Rep. Victoria Neave of Dallas told reporters that she and her colleagues were inspired by Vice President Kamala Harris. The fight over voting restrictions in Texas caught Harris’ attention, and on Monday, she commended Texan Democrats for displaying “extraordinary courage and commitment” in their exodus to Washington.

Turner told reporters that the Democrats raised enough money from donations to cover transportation, lodging and the necessities. However, members are still incurring costs out of pocket.

When a reporter asked if Democrats were collecting a state per diem allowance, many legislators murmured “no".

"No, and those premiums are paid out at the end of the month. So that would be several weeks away," Turner replied.
